I love to save money. I get some sort of sick cheap thrill out of it. Strange, I know.
When we lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland, I had a hardcore obsession with coupon clipping. In my home state, they generously double manufacturers coupons and it became a game to me to search the ads, clip my coupons and see what all I could get for free! Toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant — more than I can mention — all free! I would come home to brag to my husband (who couldn’t care less) and felt such joy from simple free items that were now filling my pantry and vanity to the brim. I miss those days, but now I focus my attention elsewhere because, unfortunately, the Sunshine State does not believe in double coupons! Such a shame!
So how else to save that doesn’t require a ton of time or effort? Apps! Nowadays, there is an app for everything. Every store has an app that functions however they wish, some with coupons, some with rewards, while some are in my opinion, just for show. I still love to coupon and search the ads but I have learned a few new tricks of the trade that help me save even more money. All from the comfort of my own home.
To begin, most grocery stores like Publix and Winn-Dixie have great apps. Before you head out, you can load digital coupons directly to your account and shop to your heart’s content. There are also websites like coupons.com, smartsource.com, target.com and many others where you can print manufacturers’ coupons straight from their sites.
Tips for Target
As for Target specifically, if you don’t have a Target Red Card yet, we can’t be friends. Seriously! You save 5% on every purchase and if you choose the debit option, the money comes directly from your checking account. Just as if you were using your debit card. Because you know you were going to anyway. So why not save 5%? Also, bring your own bags. They take 5 cents off per bag you use while checking out.
Lastly, their famous app, Cartwheel. Choose your own savings. The more you save, the more spots you unlock in your queue for even more savings. I have saved over $200 in the past few years and know friends who shop there more often and have saved way more than that! Get on it, people. These three tips combined will save you tons of money along with your regular coupons and extra special coupons you can print directly from the Target website.
Other Shopping Apps
And after all that fantastic shopping, once you get home there are apps to upload your receipts, scan the products you bought and get instant additional savings added to your account. I love Ibotta but there is also Checkout 51, and Shopmium. These apps aren’t just for groceries but also for clothing, booze, restaurants and more! Once you meet a threshold, you can withdraw cash from your account and transfer straight into your banking account. Cha-ching!
Get Rewarded for Shopping
Those all sound great, but how would you like to earn rewards just by walking into a store? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it isn’t.
My favorite app possibly of all time is Shopkick. This app recognizes when you enter certain stores that they work with like Publix, Target, Marshall’s and Home Goods. The list goes on and on. Just by walking into the door, their store recognizes you and adds points to your account with a simple few clicks. There are bonus days and even items to scan for extra points. Redeem those easy points for products like designer handbags or simple e-gift cards from your favorite stores! Why wouldn’t you download this app? You’re going to the store anyway, so why not be rewarded for walking in the door even if you are just browsing?
Get to saving people! You could even get creative and funnel all that saving toward a new outfit or family vacation. The possibilities are endless!
