Baking Soda: It’s Not Just For Chocolate Chip Cookies!

We all have a box of baking soda sitting in our pantry, right?  You use it occasionally for baking chocolate chip cookies and that’s about it, correct?

Well, you’ve been missing out!

Here are other great uses for baking soda:

This miracle product can be used in a variety of different ways, most of all cleaning!  We all have that stain that you’ve washed and it just won’t come out!  Have no fear, baking soda to the rescue.  For this cleaning tip you will need hydrogen peroxide as well.  Make a runny paste by mixing the two products, similar to pancake batter.  Using an old toothbrush, scrub into the stain. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight and wash as usual.  Did your stain disappear?  Odds are it did!

This slurry works great on regular stains, grease, and sweat stains in white t-shirts or white men’s dress shirts. I have saved so many of my husband’s shirts and it cost me pennies!  Forget those expensive stain removers that never work; instead, hit up your pantry and medicine cabinet and you will be thanking yourself with every load of laundry.

Refreshing laundry

Simply place a hefty sprinkle straight from the box into the washing machine and close the lid.  This works great for stinky workout clothes!

Home Remedies

Now that my pregnancy is progressing, here comes the heartburn.  I searched online and found many recommendations from many people swearing by our miracle product as a cure for heartburn and acid reflux.  Why does it work? The baking soda neutralizes stomach acids much like Tums or Rolaids. This is a cheap and easy fix and yes, it tastes terrible, but trust me, it works!  Add a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water, stir well and drink.  This isn’t a permanent solution, merely temporary, but in a pinch this will definitely ease your discomfort.

Bug bites

Make a paste of water and baking soda to ease bug bites!  So easy and cheaper than those regular anti-itch creams that never work anyway!

Health and Beauty

Teeth whitening

Want your teeth to be pearly white but don’t want to spend $30 on one of those expensive teeth whitening kits?  Dip a wet toothbrush into baking soda and start brushing. Your teeth will feel amazing!  As clean as that just-from-the-dentist feeling.

Face mask

Want your skin to feel silky smooth? Try a baking soda face mask.  Mix equal parts of baking soda and water, about a tablespoon each. Slather on your face. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then remove gently with a warm washcloth and upward strokes.  Moisturize afterwards and your skin will be glowing!

Around the House

Now this is possibly my favorite and most frequent use of all.  It’s also a science experiment for your shower which makes it fun!  You will need a cheap spray bottle from the dollar store along with 1/2 a cup of baking soda, 1/2 a cup of Dawn dish detergent, 1/2 a cup of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.  Mix the baking soda, Dawn and water together first then slowly add the vinegar. Shake well then start spraying.  For tough soap scum stains, scrub with a sponge or scrub brush. Let sit for a while, then rinse well with hot water. Voila! A clean sparking shower without the chemicals and terrible bleach smells!

Dump a half cup of baking soda and follow with a cup of white vinegar to defunk your garbage disposal and sinks.  This will also help with slow drains too.  After the fizz calms down, follow with hot water to flush the pipes.

I am so grateful for this wonder product. So start buying in bulk, because once you start, you won’t be able to stop!
