A Local Mom’s Guide to Small Business Saturday

We all know the madness of Black Friday, so now that it is over, let’s embrace Small Business Saturday — TODAY (11/25/17)!
It’s so important to remember that so much good comes from shopping small. It’s such a powerful way to stimulate our economy and support local entrepreneurs. Sarasota is booming with so many amazing places! This is the perfect opportunity to find gifts for everyone on your list, while continuing to provide these entrepreneurs with the opportunity to succeed.

Here are my top 2017 Sarasota small businesses you have to check out.

(Click on the names of the businesses to learn more about them!)

Wild Ginger Apothecary

This is seriously one of my top stores in all of Sarasota! The owner, Nicole, knows every product in the shop like the back of her hand and has done research to find very eco-friendly self care products that are easy on the environment and your wallet. The atmosphere is so inviting; you can easily spend a lot of time browsing and trying self-care eco products and checking out some cute styles she has in shop.
This is more than just a shop, it’s a wonderful community. There are several workshops ranging from tarot readings to marketing classes taught by other professionals. As well as wonderful yoga and fitness classes in the studio. Not only has a wonderful entrepreneur created a wonderful shop, but she is allowing other entrepreneurs to come together creatively and build their dreams as well. The store will also be having its 3 year anniversary party December 1st with all kinds of vendors, free classes, and more! Gift cards for the store and studio packages are available for the holidays.

The Clever Cup

Starbucks gift cards are my go-to stocking stuffers for teachers, co-workers and other coffee loving family members, and for me. Everyone needs to step into The Clever Cup coffee shop! There has been a serious lack of adorable coffee shops that are not big corporate Starbucks in the area, but Clever Cup has become the answer to our coffee lover needs in Gulf Gate.

Not only is Edgar, the shop owner, a master coffee brewer, he uses natural flavors and nothing artificial. A fabulous spot to meet with a friend for your gift exchange, get some work done over the holidays, or split a turkey croissant with your kid. They have paper, crayons and juice boxes available for little ones. Gift cards are available for the holidays.

Bows and Arrows Boutique

Football loving women: there is finally on trend style for us! For game day and every day, Bows and Arrows is the spot for unique and trendy styles. Located off of University, this boutique is a must check out spot. With a focus on FSU and UF fans, there is definitely something chic your fan girl does not have. Along with a wonderful choice to fit the Florida lifestyle, Bows and Arrows will not disappoint the fashionistas. The entire store will be BOGO 50% off!

Learning Express Toys of University Park

Don’t you miss the magic of going through a toy store when you were a child? As much as I love Target, the toy section just isn’t the same. Learning Express Toys is the answer to what our hearts have been missing this time of year. Owned by a wonderful husband and wife team, they fill the shelves with wonderful toys that our kids love as much as we do! There are toys that encourage creativity and learning, and that foster developmental growth and fun! You’ll see a fair assortment of things on your kid’s wish list and a few that will get them to think outside the box. Follow them on Facebook as they have many family friendly events throughout the year.

Circusoul Yoga Studio

For that person on your list who has everything, there is no greater gift than an aerial yoga experience. This has to be on your list of things to try, whether you are a seasoned yogi, or have never stepped into a yoga class before. Kerry has created a beautiful space and really pioneered aerial yoga into the yoga community. If flying in the air isn’t for you, she offers amazing classes on the earth too. If you get so addicted to aerial yoga, they also offer teacher certification programs, as well as their own hammocks you can purchase for your home. Gift certificates and class packages are available.

Crop Juice

Everyone wants to get healthy to kick off the new year right? Crop Juice is a must check out spot. Every cold pressed juice is bottled in house with very nutritious dense greens in every bottle for the most bang for your buck. Co-owner Karen has a background in oncology nursing so she does a lot of counseling in shop about how these all organic juices can benefit patients. With an overwhelming issue in health, Crop is changing the way we look at food and providing a fabulous resource for the city.
This is not just for adults either, Karen has always been at the ready with organic gummies for my toddler, and he loves the lifesaver juice and peanut butter jelly smoothie. It’s so awesome knowing we have a place that is serving his nutritional needs in a world full of French fries. Gift certificates are available as well as delicious treats for your holiday baskets. You can also receive special counseling for a customized juice cleanse. Currently, they have 4 locations: Gulf Gate, University, downtown Main Street, and in LA Fitness off of Cattleman. Check out their website for all the juicy details (no pun intended).

The Crystal Cave

Word of advice, don’t enter this store in a hurry. The atmosphere is so calm and inviting and is surprisingly large for a small shop. I swear that owner Susan has every crystal known to man. Not to mention she is so knowledgeable that she knows exactly where to guide you with what crystal you need to tune your energies. There is a wonderful selection of stocking stuffers, from local jewelry, gorgeous crystals, tarot cards and more. Susan also puts together several workshops through the year to expand your spiritual knowledge. Gift certificates are also available.

SRQ Acupuncture and Massage

After the stress of the holidays we could all use some time to truly relax and pour some self care into our bodies. Dr. Angie Hynes is absolutely amazing. Would you believe that my first experience was actually for my young 21-month-old? I had heard about cupping prior to this, when we had respiratory issues. Well when the cold hit our household I decided to listen to a friend’s recommendation: Dr. Hynes.
Her office is so welcoming and she is fabulous with children; she was so patient with my picky and shy toddler. Lo and behold, after only one session his sinuses started to drain and he was sleeping better than in the past two days. She is so knowledgeable and intuitive to what the body needs.
I will be taking advantage of her gratitude sale on gift certificates this month.  Mention the gratitude sale and receive 15% off a gift certificate through December 1st. She also accepts most insurance and Medicaid.

Don’t forget to treat yourself this holiday. Robin, a local esthetician, has a wonderful touch. She carefully selects locally made organic ingredients to deliver the most fabulous experience. Stop in for a facial to leave your skin glowing and refreshed, and as a bonus ask about her her waxing and brow tints. Seriously, it’s amazing how a few moments to yourself can make you feel like a million bucks. Perfect way to feel amazing and glam up just before your holiday parties.
Gift certificates are available to treat yourself or a loved one for the holidays. Call for an appointment (941) 879-7606 or visit

The Artful Giraffe

This cozy home-like store is perfect to complete all your gift giving needs. From wearable art to handmade soaps, it’s almost impossible to leave empty handed. What’s awesome is that they also offer classes — a great way to bond with loved ones over the holidays. It’s affordable, educational and, most importantly, fun! Grab a gift for everyone on your list or a gift certificate and sign up for a class.

I feel like listing 10 local businesses still doesn’t do our amazing city justice!

There are several places where you can do all your holiday shopping and explore our awesome city while getting into the Florida holiday spirit. Make sure to stop by and share any of your favorite small shops with us.
