#GivingTuesday – 5 Local Charities Worthy of Your Support

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season quickly approaching, sometimes we forget about those that are less fortunate during the holidays. That’s where #GivingTuesday comes in — a day to help non-profit organizations and the people and causes they support. #GivingTuesday is the global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. #GivingTuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) — this year it’s on Nov. 28 — and kicks off the charitable season. There is no better feeling than knowing you have made someone’s holidays brighter.

Below we have compiled a list of awesome local charities in Sarasota County that focus on helping moms and children put their best foot forward.

Suncoast Charities for Children

Suncoast Charities for Children is a 501(c)(3) that provides annual grants to the Suncoast Foundation in support of children, teens, and adults with special needs and their families. Suncoast Charities for Children puts on many local events throughout the year like the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights and Santa’s Cause. All proceeds from the events benefit SCC.

Mothers Helping Mothers

Mothers Helping Mothers, Inc., is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization that has been providing basic necessities such as baby items and clothing for free to families in need. All items are donated, or purchased through grant funding or private contributions, and are provided free of charge to their clients. It’s the first place I think of when deciding where to take all my kids’ hand-me-downs, knowing they are going to someone who truly needs them. MHM has different ways to contribute, including donating items, volunteering or giving financial gifts. You can find all the info on what items are needed and how to help here.

The Haven

The Haven is an established non-profit with over 60 years of providing programs and services for children and adults with disabilities in Sarasota County. If you have ever toured The Haven, then you know what a great facility it is. They provide the best care for children and adults with disabilities. The Haven’s 20th annual Jingle & Jog 5k is coming up on December 2nd. It is a fun event for all! All proceeds benefit the mission on The Haven.

Foster Angels by the Safe Children Coalition

The Foster Angels program is a great way to involve the whole family during the holiday season. You will get a child’s age and gender, and a list of items they wish to have for Christmas. It is a great way to show your children how important it is to think of others that are less fortunate during the holidays. Plus, they will take great joy in picking out the items themselves for the child you’re paired with! Wish lists are coming in already, so submit your form to make a child’s Christmas wish come true here!

Tiny Hands Foundation

The Tiny Hands Foundation’s mission is simple – to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children in our community. Since 2001, they have been doing just that. Their 16th annual Holiday Basket Brigade is happening on December 16th. Every year they need help stuffing holiday baskets for children in need. They plan to provide 1,100 baskets this year. If you’re looking for somewhere to volunteer and bring the kiddos along, this is where you will want to be. You can find all the info here.

All of the events above make for a great family holiday tradition!
