Sarasota Events in July for SRQ Moms

Fireworks and Independence Day celebrations kick off the month of July — and there are plenty of those to choose from in the area — but there are lots of other neat Sarasota events this month. You can even celebrate another holiday this month — Halloween! There are lots of opportunities to splash around and cool off — from Sarasota Moms Blog play dates and events at splash parks, to weekly water activities at Selby Gardens. Families can also attend a circus show, celebrate Halloween in July, decorate their own ice cream and cupcakes, go on a dragon egg hunt, and much more.

Sarasota Events

All children’s admission tickets are half priced during the extended holiday weekend at Jungle Gardens. And on July 4th, admission is free for all active and retired military members, with the purchase of a same day full priced admission. 

July 1- 28: Summer Circus Spectacular at The Ringling

The 2018 Circus Spectacular will amaze and dazzle you! Looking for an hour of incredible family fun at affordable prices? Get your tickets for this show held at the Historic Asolo Theater at the Ringling. Presented in collaboration with The Circus Arts Conservatory of Sarasota, this onstage exhibition of circus artistry provides delightful summer entertainment for children of all ages. Extra bonus: Admission to the Ringling’s Circus Museum is only an additional $5 with your Summer Circus performance ticket! Tickets may be purchased at Admissions on the day of your show.

July 6: Music on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch

A free family-friendly concert series and block party for the public hosted from 6-9pm on the first Friday of each month. The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids presented by Grace Community Church. Lauren Mitchell Band will fill the air with blues and soul music and the DJ will keep you dancing with today’s Top 100 hits. Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Sarasota Southside.

July 7: Halloween in July

Do you and/or your kids love Halloween? Hate that it’s only one time a year? Well get your costumes out and go to the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall to celebrate Halloween in July inside the mall on every Saturday in July, at 10am. There will be costume contests with prizes and all the vendors will be dressed up and pass out candies. Check the event page for more details.

July 7: Splashin’ Selby Saturdays

Cool off at Selby Gardens during Splashin’ Selby Saturdays for fun water-themed activities, including water slides and games specifically geared for toddlers on up to children 10 years old! Enjoy the cool shade and Bay breezes under the banyans and around the lagoon and waterfall of the Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden. All activities are included with regular admission, free to Members. Every Saturday in July, from 10am-12pm.

July 7: Home Depot Kids Workshop

Every month, Home Depot offers a free hands-on workshop for kids and their parents. This month, parents and grandparents can building a fishing game in this hands-on workshop. Once the game is built, your child can customize it with paint and stickers. Each child gets a project, plus a workshop apron and a certificate of achievement, while supplies last. Bradenton and Sarasota Home Depots participate, as well as others, so please check the website for your local store and to pre-register (not required). Recommended ages: 5-12.

July 7: Family First Saturdays at Ringling Museum

On the First Saturday of every month enjoy programming for families with kids of all ages, with different activities taking place between 10am and 3pm. Check out the website (click on event name) for details on these programs and more during the event: Art Making (relating a project to art you can find in the galleries, for all ages); ROAR for Big Kids! (Ringling Order of Art Readers, for ages 5-7); and Kids Quest (Tours with games and activities for ages 8-12). The theme this month is Art in Asia.

July 11: SMB Play Date at the UTC Mall

Summer is here! It’s hot and the weather is getting more unpredictable so the next Lakewood Ranch & Bradenton Moms Tribe play date will be held from 10am-noon at the UTC indoor playground. This Tribe, part of Sarasota Moms Blog, meets the second Wednesday and fourth Sunday every month at different locations. All are invited. Join the Facebook group to get updates on future play dates. This is a great way to get out of the house with your kids and meet other moms in the area.

July 12: Tampa Taiko Japanese Drums

Join this fun-filled, interactive program, covering the history of taiko, the music of Japan, modern drumming performance, and drum making using discarded barrels that have been recycled into taiko drums. From 2-3pm at the Braden River Branch Library.

July 13: Parent’s Night Out at Great Explorations

This monthly program allows parents to drop off their kiddos (ages 4-10) at Great Explorations Children’s Museum from 6-10pm for a night of play! Kids get to play with all the indoor activities and other kids, while parents can go out for a date night, meet up with friends, or have a quiet night at home. Parents’ Night Out is a program on the second Friday of every month. $25 for museum members; $35 for non-members. Includes pizza, museum play, a science show, and a movie Spots are limited! Must Pre-register before 9 a.m. on day of the Parents’ Night Out you would like your child to attend.

July 14: Daisy D’Lites Day (free ice cream!)

Stop by D’Lites Shoppe from noon to 2pm on this day for a free kids ice cream cone with a purchase (1 per family), photos with Daisy (the giant ice cream cone mascot) and a kids craft. D’Lites sells low calorie, low sugar, low fat, low carb, vegan, and artisan ice creams, plus healthy treats, coffee and more. On Saturdays, the store also offers $1 off blenders.

Join us at Sarasota Moms Blog’s monthly Moms on the Town event happening at Amaitaly Sarasota! Your $5 ticket includes: Personalized styling advice for you! – Light finger foods, soda, a glass of wine. – An opportunity to win a purse from the store. – Exclusive discount on everything in the store. – Ability to meet other moms in the community and socialize or just an easy reason to get out of the house for the night with some girls! July 14: S’mores Paint Party – Kids Only Lock-In

Drop your kids off at Let’s Create Art in Bradenton for a Kid’s Only Paint Party Saturday July 14th at 7pm! Doors will lock at 7PM and will reopen for parents at 9PM! July 16: Ice Cream Social with SMB

Join Sarasota Moms Blog for our Summer Ice Cream Social! Beat the heat and join us at 10:30am at Culvers in Lakewood Ranch for a fun day of decorating and eating yummy custard! Each ticketed child will receive 1 scoop of vanilla custard which they can decorate with yummy toppings, and take a tour and see how custard is made. There may even be a special appearance by Scoopie, Culver’s mascot! $6 per child. Tickets are limited.

July 19: Christmas in July Snow Globe Craft

Celebrate Christmas in July by making beach-themed holiday crafts. Bring your own seashells, beach findings and tropical trinkets or use some items from the library’s collection to make a snow globe you can display at Christmas or year-round. For ages 12 and older. Starts at 2pm at the Shannon Staub Library.

July 20: Out of My Hands Juggling & Illusion Show

Interactive magic show performed by Gerard Tricarico at Rocky Bluff Branch Library in Ellenton. Free, from 2 to 3pm.

July 21: Head Back to Hogwarts

Most local Target stores are celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” with a Harry Potter celebration. Join for giveaways, readings, toy demos, photo opportunities and other activities. Held at the Target stores on University Parkway (by UTC), North Sarasota (Fruitville) and more. 11am-2pm.

The Braden River Library is hosting a Moana Luau Party to celebrate the end of summer. If you are up for it, wear your Moana or tropical costumes and clothes! 11am-noon.

July 21: Make Your Own Pizza

Evie’s Tavern and Grill, 5897 Whitfield Ave., is hosting a pizza making event for kids ages 3-10 every Saturday in July from 9:30am-11am. Cost is $5 and includes a pizza and a drink. Limited seating, so call 941-358-9861 to RSVP.

July 21: Make Your Own Moon Dough

Feel like you’ve landed on the moon and make your own moon dough to take home! Reservations are required for this event at Learning Express Toys on University Parkway. Must call the store to reserve a spot. Limited spots available. This is a free event and is recommended for children ages 4+. Event starts promptly at 11am.

July 21: KidSpace at the South Florida Museum

Are your kids obsesses with outer space and beyong? KidSpace is a program for kids who want to explore everything there is to know about space and become Masters of the Universe. From 10:15 – 11am on the first and third Saturday mornings, your kids can help unleash the power of the Bishop Planetarium, taking off from Earth’s surface and flying to places no human has gone before: the Sun, the planets, other moons of our solar system, newly discovered solar systems in our galaxy and beyond. KidSpace is designed for kids in elementary school (grades 1-5), and their grown-ups. Museum members, $3; Non-members, $5. Space is limited. Admission to the museum is not included, other than for members. 

Summer is here and it’s HOT! Let’s cool off and splash at the Bradenton Riverwalk! The Lakewood Ranch & Bradenton Moms Tribe will meet from 9:30-11:30am at the splash pad, where there are also two large playgrounds, one for younger kids and the other for bigger children. There are many benches available and a large grassy area suitable for laying out a blanket for a picnic. The Moms Tribe meets at 10am the second Wednesday and fourth Sunday every month at different locations for play dates. This group, part of Sarasota Moms Blog, is open to all. Join the Facebook group to get updates on future play dates. This is a great way to get out of the house with your kids and meet other moms in the area.

June 22: Magical Wonderland at Sweet Doctors *** POSTPONED – CHECK EVENT PAGE FOR UPDATES

Come explore a magical world through 3 stations of tasty and colorful treats at Sweet Doctors at the UTC Mall. Station 1: Decorate your own unicorn cupcake. Station 2: Pick a cake pop and dip in a magical and colorful chocolate fountain, then top it off at the sprinkle bar. Station 3: Hold a lit unicorn horn to twirl cotton candy. Tickets on sale soon. 

July 25: SMB End of Summer Bash at Sun n Fun

Join Sarasota Moms Blog for our End of Summer Bash at Sun n Fun! Come chat with other moms and let the kiddos have fun in the sun. Parents and kids can enjoy time in the large main pool, water slides, bounce houses, shark riding and lots more! For the smaller children there is also a kiddie area. We will have our own table area set up. Grab a bite to eat from the poolside restaurant or beat the heat with an Italian ice! Event starts at 10:30am. $5 for adults and kids over age 2 (includes entrance and all slides and bounce houses); $3 for children 2 years old and under (does not include access to slide, bounce house, etc.).

July 25-28: Shark Days at Mote Marine

Intrigued — but keeping their distance — from the sharks at Mote Marine.

Join Mote Marine Laboratory for the ever popular “Shark Days at Mote: Real Sharks, Real Science.” From July 25-July 28, Mote will dive into the science behind these incredible animals, through a variety of events and activities. As part of the event, there will be crafts, live shark feedings on Facebook and in person, and a festival.

July 26: Summer Storybook Theater

This is a free community event for children ages 2-6. The event includes a theatrical presentation, theme craft and snack, and recreational activity. July 27: Van Wezel Friday Fest 

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall’s free outdoor summertime concert series continues with Reverend Barry and The Funk. This 8-piece band plays a high-energy set of originals and covers of funk & soul music including Earth, Wind & Fire, Commodores, Kool & the Gang, and Prince.  The event runs from 5-9pm and is located on the Bayside Lawn of the Van Wezel. Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs, and purchase items from food trucks and beverage vendors. Bring the whole family and enjoy watching the sun set over the bay.

July 28: Dragon Hunt at The Children’s Garden

Dragons have landed in a magical realm, and laid their eggs throughout. Kids can visit The Children’s Garden and go an adventure as they search for all the hidden dragon eggs! First, kids will make “Fruity Oops” necklaces to take with them on their hunt, to give them extra strength. This will give us magical strength if we get tired. The Dragon Hunt starts at 10am sharp with a dragon tale, told by the Master Dragon Trainer, who will teach kids about these mythical creatures. Then the hunt begins, and a prize will be given to the knight who finds the Magical Golden Dragon Egg. This family-friendly event is free for members and included in your admission for non-members. Please make sure you arrive early because once all the eggs are found, the hunt will be over. Pack a lunch and play in the Garden afterwards.

Jan 29: Westfield Mall’s Full Inclusion Back to School Bash

Stop by the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall for the Westfield Mall’s Full Inclusion Back to School Bash this summer while your family prepares for the 2018 school year at an event filled with hands on activities, an interactive scavenger hunt, children food demos, a fun-filled sports zone, meet and greets with the best local Tampa Bay mascots and more! Find out what’s new in style, supplies, and technology to help your kids have a successful school year. Meet professional sport team mascots, princesses and superheroes.  And the first 250 kids will receive a free backpacks with school supplies.

July 29: Summer Fun Night

The Bridge Church is hosting a huge family event from 5-8pm to wrap up the summer. They are inviting everyone to come out and join them for an evening of free bounce houses, cold treats, face painting, dunk tank, photo booth, an indoor movie and more. There will also be food trucks on campus for food purchases. There is going to be something enjoyable for everyone, so invite your friends to join you.

 

4th of July Celebrations

July 1- 4: Independence Day Weekend Special at Jungle Gardens

July 3: USA Story Time and Craft

Get ready for Independence Day by listening to some patriotic stories and by making your own fireworks! These crafty fireworks are just as pretty without all the noise. This is a free event at Learning Express Toys at University Park, and is recommended for children 3 and up. Event starts promptly at 11am.

July 3: NBP Fireworks on the Lake

Get your pre-4th sparkle and boom on early! Enjoy music and a spectacular fireworks show with your family. Bring your picnic, blanket or folding chairs. Personal fireworks prohibited. You can bring your own food and drinks, however, no glass containers are allowed. A variety of musical groups will perform. Do not bring your dogs to this event, as the fireworks display may frighten them. Free admission. 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. Fireworks to begin at 9 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. Nathan Benderson Park, 5851 Nathan Benderson Cir, Sarasota, FL. 

July 4: Fireworks Spectacular over Sarasota Bay

Night time brings the Fireworks Spectacular over Sarasota Bay. As part of the Suncoast Offshore Festival, viewing is free from anywhere downtown, including Bayfront Park and Island Park. The display is an awesome sight from a boat anchored on Sarasota Bay. Make sure you bring an umbrella just in case of rain. The Sarasota show starts at dusk or around 9:00 p.m. and is privately funded and charity focused and benefits Suncoast Charities for Children.

July 4: Siesta Key Fireworks

The 28th Annual 4th of July Fireworks Display in Siesta Key will begin around 9pm. Fireworks over the #1 beach in the nation, Siesta Key, are blasted off just north of the volleyball courts, so viewing is good from anywhere south and along Crescent Beach (south of Siesta Public Beach), out on the Gulf, or from the Intracoastal Waterway. Beach spectators are strongly advised to not bring their own fireworks. With so many people, especially small children, individuals using fireworks can be extremely dangerous. Good weather brings estimates of 20,000 to 30,000 to the fireworks on Siesta Key.

July 4: Venice Fireworks

The Venice area fireworks are fired from the south Venice Jetty in the Venice Beach area and there are a number of good vantage points: anywhere along Venice Beach, Nokomis Beach, or from a boat on the Gulf of Mexico or anchored on the Intracoastal waterway, northeast of the Jetty on the water. Fireworks go up after sunset. Beach spectators are strongly advised to not bring their own fireworks. With so many people, especially small children, individuals using fireworks can be extremely dangerous. Arrive early as thousands line the beaches, jetty and surrounding waterways.

July 4: Annual Freedom Fest and Hot Diggity Dog Parade

The Annual Freedom Fest and Hot Diggity Dog Parade begins at 9 a.m. at Town Hall, 501 Bay Isles Road. Commissioners, police and fire rescue personnel are in the parade along with children who wish to dress up and walk with their pets. Put on your best red, white and blue and decorate your bike or wagon. Parade lineup begins at  8:30 a.m. on Bay Isles Road. Activities, food and drinks, plus children’s games, will all be located at Bicentennial Park, next to Town Hall, after the parade. 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Contact the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce for more information: 941-383-2466.

July 5: UTC Mall Summer Fun Club – Stars and Stripes Celebration

Join The Mall at UTC for the fifth Summer Fun Club of the season. This week’s theme is a Stars & Stripes Celebration, so you can keep the patriotic fun going beyond the holiday! Summer Fun Club is every Thursday from 10 am – 12 pm from through July 26. Located at Dillard’s Court, lower level (near the children’s play area). Each week will have a different theme where kids can enjoy FREE activities, crafts, music and more.

Weekly Activities

Mondays: Mad Science at the Library

The Manatee County Public Library will host a weekly Mad Science program at the downtown Bradenton library on most Mondays, at 10:30am. This is geared toward school-aged kids. Each week will have a different theme. July 9: Spin Pop Boom! Show. July 16: Science of Magic Show. July 23: Sounds Like Science.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: Baby Boot Camp 

Baby Boot Camp is a stroller fitness group where moms can bring their babies in jogging strollers and exercise in a group setting. After the workouts, children get to play at the park while the moms socialize. The aim is to provide a supportive environment for all mothers to get in shape while developing a sense of community. Classes start at 9:30am.  

Tuesdays: Preschool Craft and Story Time at Arts A Blaze Studio

Each week, kids (ages 5 and under) will create a pottery piece (to be picked up later) or canvas project as well as a pre-k appropriate craft that they may take home the same day. After the arts and crafts are complete, a story will be read. Cost is $12 unless otherwise stated. Space is limited and reservations receive priority. Begins at 10am at Arts A Blaze Studio in Lakewood Ranch.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays: $1 Family Movies at Regal Cinemas

Get out of the heat and into the cool comfort of a movie theater, with $1 family movies at Regal Cinemas. At 10am every Tuesday and Wednesday from June 4-Aug. 15, there will be an option of two different movies. While they are slightly older movies, they are usually favorites among kids, including both animated and live action films. Our local Regal Cinemas include Regal Hollywood Stadium 11 (downtown Sarasota) and Regal Oakmont 8 (Bradenton). A portion of the proceeds goes to the Will Rogers Institute.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays: Kids Summer Beach Runs

This summer there are FREE kids summer beach runs at Siesta Key Public Beach on Tuesdays at 5:30pm and Venice Beach by Sharky’s on Wednesdays at 5:30pm, from June 5 to August 7. Kids ages 1-17 will be awarded participation ribbons and an ice pop. Registration at each location starts at 5:30pm with the run starting promptly at 6:30pm. Participants that complete 4 runs earn a free T-shirt and other prizes. More information at 941-861-5000.

Thursdays and Sundays: Toddler Time at Sky Zone

The Toddler Time program offers kids ages 5 and under free run of all open trampoline courts and foam pits in the park. Toddler Time at Sky Zone is a special time, just for the little ones, where they can explore exciting new ways to be active. One parent can assist for free. Additionally, check out the Glow and Character Toddler Time events held select Toddler Time days.

Wednesdays and Saturdays: Children’s Yoga at Pineapple Yoga Studio.

Every Saturday at 1:45-2:30 and every Wednesday at 4-4:45, $10 per child. Also, each month, on the first Sunday of the month there will be a 2-hour workshop at Pineapple Yoga Studio for $30 per child or $50 for 2. This is based on Chakras, crystals and yoga. Additionally, a monthly yoga and essential oils workshop will take place at Colonial Oaks Park, from 4-5pm. Kids yoga will also be held at Circusoul yoga studio from 1:30-2:30 every Monday.

Thursdays: Summer Fun Club at UTC Mall

Join The Mall at UTC for the annual Summer Fun Club, which keeps kids entertained inside the AC-filled mall. Summer Fun Club is every Thursday from 10 am-noon from June 7 through July 26. Dillard’s Court, lower level (near the children’s play area). Each week will have a different theme where kids can enjoy FREE activities, crafts, music and more!

Thursdays and Fridays: ROAR: Ringling Order or Art Readers

Stories and illustrations are often a child’s first exposure to the joy of reading and the wonder of art. ROAR! is The Ringling’s family story time designed to engage toddlers and preschoolers in activities that connect art with early literacy. Stop by for a story and an accompanying activity. This program is free but now requires a free ticket that can be picked up in the Visitors Pavilion the morning of the program. Starting in 2018, the program has expanded to Thursdays too and is held every week. A similar program, ROAR for Big Kids, is held on the first Saturday of the month (next one is June 2nd). There’s plenty of other family programming too.

Saturdays: Free Try-It Ice Skating Class

Want to learn or test your ice skating skills? Stop by the free try-it class held every Saturday at Ellenton Ice Skating. The class is open to all ages, as long as you can find ice skates that fit you (skates start at size 6). The class is first come, first serve, and accepts 20 participants, so get there early.

From 10:15 – 11am on the first and third Saturday mornings, your kids can help unleash the power of the Bishop Planetarium, taking off from Earth’s surface and flying to places no human has gone before: the Sun, the planets, other moons of our solar system, newly discovered solar systems in our galaxy and beyond. KidSpace is designed for kids in elementary school (grades 1-5), and their grown-ups. Museum members, $3; Non-members, $5. Space is limited. Admission to the museum is not included, other than for members.

Saturdays: Make Your Own Pizza

Evie’s Tavern and Grill, 5897 Whitfield Ave., is hosting a pizza making event for kids ages 3-10 every Saturday in July from 9:30am-11am. Cost is $5 and includes a pizza and a drink. Limited seating, so call 941-358-9861 to RSVP.

Saturdays: Halloween in July

Are your kids itching to put on their Halloween costumes and go trick-or-treating? Well get your costumes out and go to the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall to celebrate Halloween in July inside the mall on every Saturday in July, at 10am. There will be costume contests with prizes and all the vendors will be dressed up and pass out candies. Check the event page for more details.

Saturdays and Sundays: Kids Ride Free on the Florida Railroad Museum Train 

Purchase tickets for a weekend excursion on the Museum’s vintage railroad equipment. The round trip lasts approximately 1.5 hours. A brief stop at Willow Yard is included to talk about the history of Willow and view the rest of the Museum’s equipment collection. Summer Special:  Up to 3 children (ages 12 and under) can ride free with an adult per reservation in July and August.

Saturdays and Sundays: Family Fun Open Paint

The Makers Market and Workshops provide DIY workshops for kids ages 6 and up and their parents. The laid-back weekend classes are the perfect backdrop for that family bonding time while creating a wall-worthy project you will be proud to display in your home. Each guest will receive a 12″ x 16″ wood sign and the option to choose from over 70 of the most popular stencil designs. Held at 10am and 1pm.

Daily: Free admission to Ringling Museum

Admission to the art museum is free every Monday. The outdoor grounds, though, are free every day from 10am-5pm. There you can have fun in the playground, which has a water/sand area; search for hidden outdoor sculptures; explore the many scenic nooks and gardens; have a picnic along the bayfront; and take photos of your children in the beautiful grounds.
